Where the rainforest meets the reef
1-4 November: The Daintree & Cape Tribulation
Did we just wake up in paradise? The view from our caravan in Cape Tribulation was pretty spectacular! We spent 4 days in this World Heritage Wonderland, camping on the beach.
The Eastern Kuku Yalanji are the Traditional Owners of Madja (Cape Tribulation), in the Daintree National Park. The Daintree is one of the few places on earth where the rainforest meets the reef, both of which are valued for their exceptional biological diversity.
We spent some time at the Daintree Discovery Centre to learn about the rainforest, from the ground, right up into the canopy.
The Daintree covers an area of 1200 square kms & is the largest tropical rainforest in Australia. It has continued to evolve for around 180 million yrs, surviving through the ages and cataclysmic events that wiped out the dinosaurs. It is the oldest intact lowland tropical rainforest in the world & truly one of earths most precious, living treasures. It houses almost a complete record of the evolution of plant life.
The boys were lucky to spot a cassowary roaming through the rainforest.
We couldn't resist a drive up the Bloomfield Track, crossing the Bloomfield River into the tiny Indigenous village - Wajul Wajul. The creek crossings, steep hills and in sections thick bulldust make for a bit of an adventure.
The track was the site of one of Australia's most significant environmental protests where in 1984 locals attempted to oppose the track being forged from Cape trib to Cooktown. Although unsuccessful, the protests drew international attention and assisted in the rainforest being protected by ensuring its World Heritage Status.
Much to Noah's joy we treated the boys to a horseride through the rainforest and along the beach. Noah is such a natural, and thoroughly loved every second.
There was plenty of time for playing in the sand, building cubbies out of palm fronds, climbing trees, swinging in the warm breeze and soaking up the pure rainforest air. What a treat to be relaxing in this picture perfect paradise.
